Hispanic Heritage Month at QVCC: Bomba Workshop and Performance

WILLIMANTIC AND DANIELSON, CT — Quinebaug Valley Community College is pleased to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, which is annually celebrated from September 15 to October 15, with two Bomba workshops and performances by Movimiento Cultural and the Sonia Plumb Dance Company.

The workshop and performance will be held on Thursday, October 20 at noon on the cafeteria patio, located on the main campus at 742 Upper Maple Street, Danielson, CT.

Movimiento Cultural is a community-based nonprofit that seeks to educate people across Connecticut about Puerto Rico’s rich African-based folklore, music, dance, and other art forms, especially the Bomba, which is the oldest Puerto Rican dance and music style rooted in resistance and dating back to the days of slavery, while strengthening racial understanding and relationships. The Sonia Plumb Dance Company’s mission is to “awaken, enrich, and educate communities to diverse perspectives of our world” through the lens of modern dance.

The event is organized and sponsored by the QVCC Cultural Programming Committee.

The first performance will be held on Thursday, September 15, from 7 to 8 pm near QVCC’s Willimantic Center at 729 Main Street during the city’s Third Thursday Street Festival. The second performance will be held on Thursday, October 20, at 12:30 – 2:00 pm on the cafeteria patio on the main campus, located at 742 Upper Maple Street, Danielson, CT.

About Rev. Maurice S. Porter:
Born the heir of an opulent preaching legacy, Rev. Maurice S. Porter represents the fifth generation of Christian ministers in his family. Vastly becoming respected as an international hope agent, he is a husband, father, preacher, pastor, and friend to many. He is known for his oratorical excellence and practical approach to both biblical and societal matters consistently merging his spiritual convictions with his personal knowledge and experiences. He is formally educated in the best of universities and thoroughly experienced in the most diverse of contexts. Most notably, Maurice Porter is the Founder and Pastor of Impact Church located in Hartford, CT.

Black History Month – “Toni Morrison – The Pieces I Am” Film & Discussion

The Cultural Programming Commitee is hosting a showing of the film “Toni Morrison – The Pieces I Am” in celebration of Black History Month.

Toni Morrison leads an assembly of her peers and critics on an exploration of the powerful themes she confronted throughout her literary career in this artful and intimate meditation that examines the life and work of the legendary storyteller.
