Pharmacy Technicians help licensed pharmacists provide medication and other products to patients. Pharmacy Technicians usually perform routine tasks to help prepare prescribed medication, such as counting tablets and labeling bottles. They also perform administrative duties, such as answering phones, stocking shelves, and operating cash registers.

Program Description

This certificate program is being offered in partnership with Three Rivers Community College and will prepare students to start a new career path at a hospital or pharmacy while working under the supervision of a registered pharmacist as described above. Proper customer service in the health care setting will also be emphasized. Additionally, the instructor will spend some time focusing on the quantitative procedures, such as: prescription filling, sterile product preparation, compounding, and calculating prescription dosages, which would be a requirement if students choose to pursue a career as a registered pharmacist. This class prepares the student to take the national Pharmacy Technician Board (PTCB) national certification exam, which is at a separate cost. Visit http://www.ptcb.org/ for more information.

NOTE: Background checks are required for most allied health positions. Students with felony convictions may have difficulty obtaining employment in these fields.

Employment Outlook

About 75% of pharmacy technician jobs are in retail pharmacies, either independently owned or part of a drugstore chain, grocery store, department store, or mass retailer. About 16% of jobs are in hospitals and a small portion are in mail-order and internet pharmacies, offices of physicians, pharmaceutical wholesalers, and the federal government.

Employment of pharmacy technicians is expected to increase by 9% from 2014 to 2024, an increase that is faster than the average for all occupations. The increased number of middle-aged and elderly people – who use more prescription drugs than younger people – will spur demand for technicians throughout the projection period. In addition, as scientific advances bring treatments for an increasing number of conditions, more pharmacy technicians will be needed to fill a growing number of prescriptions.

The average salary for pharmacy technicians in Eastern Connecticut is estimated to be between $33,986, with an average hourly salary of $16.34.
