Viengasamay Malinga

Q: “How would you describe QVCC’s English Second Language Program?”

A: “Simply phenomenal…”

Viengasamay Malinga (Vieng) moved to the United States from Laos in 1987. Right after high school, Vieng focused on her family and work. She did not consider advancing her education after a high school diploma. She knew very little English and was not fully confident is her ability to read and write in English.

Later in life, Vieng decided she wanted to grow in her work place and improve her English.  She was recommended to look into the ESL program offered at QVCC. Fast forward to May 2017, and she has completed the ESL program and is enrolled in the General Studies Associates Program.

Vieng is an employee at United Natural Foods Inc. and says she would not be the person she is today without the help she received through QVCC and the ESL program.

“Every time I walk on campus, I feel like I am at home, everyone here is so willing to help me and guide me in the right direction.”

When Vieng started at QVCC, she did not know that she could apply for scholarships. With the help from the faculty and staff at QVCC, she was able to complete the scholarship applications and received enough scholarships to allow her to be completely debt free.

“I am so thankful for the scholarships I received. It is my goal in life to one day be successful enough to give back to other ESL students and allow them the same opportunities I’ve had.”
