Motorcycle Safety TrainingWelcome to the Connecticut Motorcycle Rider Education Program at QVCC. Motorcycling is one of the most exciting forms of transportation. Part of the thrill of motorcycling is to know that you are totally responsible for every action taken, from timing each shift to keeping a keen eye out for other motorists.

To understand these responsibilities and get the most from your experiences, the Connecticut Basic Rider Course (BRC) is the place to start. This course offers expert instruction for both the beginner and experienced rider. Successful completion of this course fulfills the requirements of the State-approved novice rider course for licensing, leaving only the written test to be taken at the CT Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

COURSE OPTIONS

The Basic Rider Course offered at QVCC provides you with two course options. For both options, student must have internet access via a computer or mobile device to complete the online course requirements.

  • Time Code A – Students complete the mandatory 3-hour eCourse,  an online e-learning course, classroom instruction, and on-cycle activities. Students must show proof of completing mandatory 3-hour e-course at the first day of range practice.
    • 3-hour mandatory eCourse
    • Thursday Class – 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
    • Saturday Range & Class –  8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
    • Sunday Range – 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
  • Time Code C – Students complete a 5-hour eCourse, an online e-learning course, and on-cycle activities. Students must show proof of completing 5-hour e-course at the first day of range practice.
    • 5-hour mandatory eCourse
    • Saturday Range –  8:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
    • Sunday Range – 8:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

COURSE LOCATIONS

Norwich – Classroom Location: Holiday Inn, 10 Laura Boulevard, Norwich, CT   • Motorcycle Range Location: D.A.S. Fleet Operations, 171 Salem Turnpike, Norwich, CT

Colchester – Motorcycle Range Location: Colchester Park and Ride Lot, 73 Lake Hayward Road, Colchester, CT

Fee: $240 Non-Refundable 

Choose your class dates carefully to ensure your ability to attend all sessions on time. Any absence or tardiness for any reason will require you to register for another course at full cost and from the beginning. No exceptions.


WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THE BASIC RIDER COURSE BEFORE YOU REGISTER

  • Motorcycles will be provided.
  • Full payment is required to register. Course fees are non-refundable once registered.
  • Course confirmations and e-course links are sent by email once registration is completed.
  • The eCourse includes topics on selecting proper riding gear, defensive riding strategies, and how to handle a variety of riding strategies.
  • Proof of eCourse completion must be presented to the instructor at the first day of range practice.
  • Students cannot earn their Motorcycle endorsement without completing the eCourse.
  • The on-ground classroom sessions will reinforce the topics learned in the eCourse, and will help students complete their own Rider Self-Assessment.
  • Student Waivers are required on first range day: WaiverMinor Waiver (for participants under 18)

ENROLLMENT ELIGIBILITY

Persons enrolling in a Basic Rider Course:

  • Must possess either a current, valid motor vehicle operator’s license or a Connecticut DMV issued motor vehicle operator learner’s permit.
  • Have the physical ability to operate a motorcycle.
  • Able to balance a two-wheeled vehicle.
  • Required to have written parental permission if under the age of eighteen (18).
  • Must be at least sixteen (16) years of age.

2023 Season

All seats have been filled for the 2023 season. If you would like to be added to our email list for the 2024 season, please fill out the this form.  We anticipate having next year’s season information available in March 2024.
