Welcome to the QV Science Department!

image of a sunrise over a lighthouse in maineThe Science Department at Quinebaug Valley seeks to support our student populations and all other academic areas by providing both prerequisite and elective course offerings.  Courses offerings include introductory and secondary-level classes in biology, chemistry, environmental science, and physics.  In addition, introductory courses are offered in agriculture, astronomy, cannabis studies, geology, health and physical education science, horticulture, oceanography, and the nature of science.

The Science faculty are committed to supporting the needs of students across the curriculum, from introductory courses for those looking to develop basic science skills, to higher level courses that are requirements in many degree and certificate programs.  We strive to help students develop scientific literacy and an understanding of the process of science through our work with the traditional science disciplines.  We expect that the scientific literacy developed here at QV will serve them well as citizens, workers, and fully realized individuals.

Through participation in the science courses at this College, it is expected that students will satisfy a number of the College’s nine General Education Outcomes including:

“Integrate and apply the fundamental principles and methods of scientific inquiry …”
“Apply logical critical, ethical, and creative processes and information to identify problems, evaluate alternative solution, and make decisions.”
“Demonstrate the ability to work effectively as an individual and as part of a group.”
