No Dakota Access Pipeline (#NoDAPL) Movement
Featuring Waniya Locke and Jessye Stein
This year Visions in Leadership will present two leaders who have played instrumental roles in the No Dakota Access Pipeline (#NoDAPL) Movement.
What is the #NoDAPL Movement?
The Dakota Access Pipeline is proposed to transport 450,000 barrels of crude oil per day from the Bakken fields of North Dakota to Patoka, Illinois, crossing the tribal lands of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. The pipeline will also cross the Missouri River, potentially polluting drinking water for millions of people. Despite pressure from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the U.S. Department of Interior (DOI) and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, Dakota Access failed to consult the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe or conduct a full environmental impact statement. Due to these concerns, the Tribe has established resistance camps as a form of non-violent direct action against the pipeline to protect the water.
The Foundation recognizes this protest as a highly debated current event. The views expressed by the speakers are their own and do not necessarily represent the views of the QVCC Foundation.
Visions in Leadership was founded by the QVCC Foundation in 2010 as an opportunity for students, faculty, staff, and community members to listen to and learn from speakers of national recognition. Our goal is to show our community that there is a world beyond NE Connecticut and that individuals can achieve great things regardless of personal circumstance.
